Dysport® is an FDA-approved injectable treatment designed to temporarily reduce or eliminate moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Similar to BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport is injected directly into targeted muscles to relax them and prevent contractions that cause wrinkles.

Also known by the name Reloxin, Dysport is derived from the same botulinum toxin type A used in BOTOX, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

Applications for Dysport® Injectable

While commonly used for cosmetic purposes, Dysport also offers therapeutic benefits. Medically, it is used to treat:

  • Excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Cervical dystonia (a condition causing neck pain and abnormal head position)
  • Muscle spasms

Cosmetically, Dysport injections are used to improve the appearance of:

  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Vertical neck bands

Dysport® Injectable Procedure and Results

Dysport is administered using a fine needle inserted directly into the facial muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles. While anesthesia is not typically necessary, some providers may apply ice or a topical numbing cream for comfort. Results are often visible within a few days and can last up to four months. With consistent treatments, the effects may last even longer. For best results and safety, Dysport should only be administered by a qualified healthcare provider.

Candidates for Dysport® Injectable

According to the manufacturer, ideal candidates for Dysport are adults under 65 seeking temporary improvement in moderate-to-severe glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows). Dysport may not be appropriate for individuals with:

  • Allergies to Dysport or its ingredients
  • Allergy to cow’s milk protein
  • Significant facial asymmetry
  • Surgical changes to the face
  • Weak facial muscles in the targeted area
  • Infection or inflammation at the injection site
  • Droopy eyelids or sagging skin
  • Deep facial scars
  • Thick or oily skin
  • Wrinkles that don’t respond when stretched

Additionally, those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neuromuscular disorder should avoid Dysport treatment.

Differences Between Dysport® Injectable and BOTOX® Cosmetic

Though both Dysport and BOTOX are derived from the same neurotoxin, some anecdotal reports suggest that Dysport may take effect more quickly, spread over a wider area, and offer longer-lasting results compared to BOTOX. However, individual response may vary.

Side Effects of Dysport® Injectable

Most side effects are mild and temporary, and normal activities can typically be resumed right after treatment. Common injection-site side effects include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Inflammation
  • Bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Infection

When used in the glabellar area, Dysport may cause temporary eyelid drooping, which usually resolves within three weeks. Overall, the side effect profile is similar to that of BOTOX® Cosmetic.
